The project is a collaboration between Leeds Beckett University, Horbury Group, the Dry Lining and Plastering Training Forum (DLPTF), White Frog, and Northumbria University. It aims to help business leaders develop skills and mindsets to drive digital transformation.
We recognise that the nature of the construction industry hinders the widespread diffusion of innovation. Factors such as the industry's fragmentation, demand structures, procurement, risk-sharing, and discontinuities in relationships are barriers to innovation. Therefore, a supply-chain perspective is essential to boost the diffusion of digital innovation in the construction industry. The project seeks to deliver free digital leadership training to senior leaders and managers in construction supply chains using a hub & spoke model. The training model provides a coordinated approach to digital innovation in the construction supply chain. The first cohort of leaders will start their digital leadership training programme in August 2021. The programme will comprise webinars and eLearning modules.

The training programme includes five modules. The training focuses on helping leaders understand how they can help organisations navigate through the digital transformation process.
This module provides an overview of the digital leadership training course and will be delivered as an online webinar. This will be an opportunity for business leaders, to evaluate their digital leadership skills needs, their organisations’ digital environment, and key focus areas for digital leadership development.
This module will demonstrate the business case for digital transformation. The adoption of digital technologies should reflect the value of such technologies to organisations. Studies show that understanding the business case is a key driver for digital technology adoption.
This module provides insight into the leadership influence in driving digital innovation in the organisation. The module starts with providing a contextual definition of digital leadership and then demonstrates the role of leaders in driving digital innovation. Issues such as the leadership attitudes towards digital transformation and digital leadership skills and competencies are also discussed.
The theme focuses on understanding the digital landscape and the opportunities provided. Examples of digital tools to help improve the efficiency of organisational and construction project processes will be given. In the first cohort, we demonstrate the application and business value of building information modeling. Other digital applications will also be addressed.
The last module seeks to help leaders develop a digital strategy and implementation plan to drive digital innovations in their organisations. Examples of models used in managing digital-focused change are provided. The McKinsey 7S model is used to demonstrate the key intra-organisational areas that need to change if organisations are to be successful in their digital transformation journey.
